Portrait Photographer Research Assignment
Photographer: Cory Smith
1. Yin and Yang
-This is a Glamour Portrait, because the women in the picture are arranged and made up in a way that some would describe as beautiful.
-Lighting: Low Key lighting (black background)
-A fill light might have been used in order to control the contrast in the picture.
-There is balance in this portrait with the symmetry betweent the two women. They both have the same facial expression, and their faces are arranged in a way that they are almost mirrored across a diagonal, mirrored in basic shape and space not exactly a copy.
-There is contrast in this portrait with the use of balance and colour. For example, the girls are mirrored with colour, such as what is white on one woman is black on the other. This allows the women to standout in with each of their respective elements. The fact that this portrait has Low Key lighting (a black background) allows for more contrast because the white elements stand out even more.
-This portrait shows texture in the smoothness of the women's skin, hair, lips and more. This smooth texture adds to the illusion of the portrait and displays the women's beauty and glamour.
-There is direction and movement in this portrait. An example of this is the circle crop of the portrait. The portrait has been cropped into a circle shape, this depicts movement because a circle is a shape that is continuous (has no corners or end) and the circle cropping gives the impression that the portrait could "rotate."
-This is an example of an Environmental Portrait since the subject (the Miner) has been photographed in his natural environment (a mine).
-The photographer has used the rule of thirds in the composition of this portrait in order to bring focus to the Miner, the subject of this portrait. The Miner is on the right vertical line of third. This brings more emphasis and focus to him, ensuring that he is the first thing that observers see.
-More emphasis was added to the Miner by making the background blurry and the Miner sharp.
-A key light might have been used to give the Miner a more 3-D shape compared to the background, ensuring that he stands out.
-An accent light might have been used in order to separate the subject (the Miner) from the background to add emphasis to it.
-The lines of the truck add some focus to the background in order to display the environment of the subject. They lead the eye from the subject to aspects of the background.
-The bronze colour of the picture makes it look vintage and rustic.
-This portrait is an example of a glamour portrait, because the woman in the portrait is dressed and arranged in a way that portrays her as carefree and beautiful.
-The types of lighting that might have been used in this portrait are key lighting, fill lighting and accent lighting. The key lighting to give the woman a more 3-D shape, the fill lighting to control the contrast, and accent lighting in order to separate the subject (the woman) from the background.
-Movement is shown in this portrait in many ways. Firstly there is the scarf that is being flown behind the woman. It is held in a way that show that it might be dragged behind her, and also the folds and creases in the fabric show that something (maybe wind) is giving it some form and movement. Movement is also shown in the position of the women. She is bent into a position that gives the impression that she is running or dancing.
-There is contrast in this portrait with the use of bright colours on the main subject while the background is mostly dark dull colours. This puts more emphasis on the woman and allows her to stand out against the background.
-Texture is present in this portrait in the grass at the bottom, the smoothness and folds of fabric of the scarf in the air and the fabric of the woman's clothes. The texture present in this portrait gives more form and death to the objects such as her clothes and the scenery, making it stand out more, and seem more realistic.
-Colour is used in this portrait to capture the eye of the viewer as a focal point. The bright red colour is present in the scarf flying behind the woman and also in the scarf that is tied around the woman's waist. The brightness of the colour draws the eye to it and the woman's body.
